First off, you’re probably wondering what exactly Geocaching is. Geocaching is an outdoor activity where people use a GPS device and various navigational techniques to hide and find containers (referred to as “geocaches”) around the world. Think of it as a large scale scavenger hunt, but you know where the items are.
Geocaching is a great way to spend the day or a weekend. It also seems to be increasing in popularity as the availability of GPS devices become more readily available. At this point most car navigation and personal cell phones have a GPS component. However, for those serious about Geocaching many invest in high tech systems more complex than what you find on your smartphone.
Whether you are buying a cheap system or investing in the top of the line auto navigation system, you will find geocaching to be a lot of fun for a combination of reasons:
1) It allows you to be a kid again. When you were young you may have played hide and seek, man hunt, or organized scavenger hunts. You could spend hours looking for one another or items such as pine cones. Whatever you called the game; it was the thrill of the hunt that was important.
2) It gets you outside. With all of today’s technological luxuries many people are spending less and less time outside. Instead of spending the day inside on the computer or watching TV Geocaching gets you outdoors, walking, running, biking, hiking, swimming, and mountain climbing. It’s a great way to experience the outdoors.
3) Socializing and learning about others. Geocaching is a great group activity. Plus, when you find a Geocache you will learn about the people by the items they left behind and reading their logs.
4) Being part of something bigger than yourself. A show like Treasure Hunters on NBC was very popular. The participants competed to find specific treasures after finding clues at different locations through their travels. Geocaching may not have the big cash prize at the end like NBC show, but it can still be fun in its own eight. Participating in this event will lead you on the same course as those who have sought that same Geocache in the past.
It is highly recommended that you try Geocaching for yourself to see the level of enjoyment you get out of it. Geocaching is a way that auto navigation systems can bring life to your daily living.
